Hickox family
My grand father was the the youngest son of Ellen Blake ne Hickox, the daughter of Joseph Hickox , Blacksmith from Bosbury and who lived at some time at Horse Hole.
Arthur Harry Blake (my grandfather) married Winnifred May Powell (ne Close) widow of Charles William Powell who was killed in WW1 and is remembered on the memorial.
I gather there were cousins of the Hickox's in the area.
I know that Ellen and her sister Mary ann, who married a James Atkey, lived in the IOW and are buried there at All Staints Church Freshwater.
Any further information gratefully recievied.

I recently discovered that Mary Ann sister of Ellen married a Marine and was widowed young. She then moved to IOW and is buried there (died 1943 )in Freshwater where her sister is also buried having died in 1941. Her chidlren went to naval boarding schools and daughter Ivy and Elsie married on the IOW. Should you want any further info happy to oblige.
Hickox Family
Sue, I think you may find that Ellen HICKOX was the daughter of Thomas HICKOX who was a Blacksmith living at Pow Green,Bosbury. Thomas was the son of Joseph HICKOX, Blacksmith, who used also to live at Pow Green. Thomas had a number of brothers, one of whom was called Joseph, also a Blacksmith, who lived at Horsehole. Joseph HICKOX senior is my 2 x Great Grandfather.
There are indeed other HICKOX 19th century family members in the Mathon, Bosbury,Worcester area.
Can I be of assistance?
Hickox family
Sorry for the delay in replying. Thanks for the info i am sure you can help.I have some family history sorted but ofcourse there are always knew things to unearth. there is an Ann Hickox living in Cheshire/Lanchashire who's grandfather moved to Birmingham and then Sheffield for work in the metals working industries.Ellen died at Freshwater Bay IOW and is buried there as is her sister Mary Ann who married James Atkey a Marine. I have the Atkey family history from the author of the one name research. I gather Ellen and her husband Joseph Blake spent much of their life travelling with the Artillery all around the world. One son born en route to South Africa and then she nursed Cholera vicitims going up the Yellow River (i was told by my grandfather).
I see on the website a photo of the choir and there is a likeness of the woman sitting far left to a lady on the wedding photo of Ellen's daughter I am guessing she may be a Hickox. Also on that photo is a young man on the right who looks a little like Charles Powell who was my paternal grandmothers first husband killed in 1918. i believe i have sent photos relating to Charles and Winnfred Amy Close , their son who sadly died as and infant and possibly the wedding photo of Ellen's daughter. There is also a photo of the Hickox clan outside the Smithy that i can send you a copy of as you may recognise some of the family members. i live fairly locally in Gloucestershire so would be happy to meet up and exchange any info
