Shepherd Family
I have just discovered that my Great, great, grandfather, CHARLES SHEPHERD (SHEPPARD) lived in Mathon in 1841. He and subsequent generations were born in Mathon but I do not know who his father was, can anyone help with any information on the SHEPHERD family

The Shepherd family of Moorend Cross
I guess I'm the person who is referred to as having taken the photo of the Shepherd gravestone, back in 2007. I'm also in touch with janw, via the Ancestry website, and we have exchanged information about the Shepherd family and their forebears. The current Mathon residents were very helpful to me with local information when I visited in 2007. Using old Census lists, I worked out which property had been the Shepherds' home (now known as The Homestead - the right-hand side only had been the semi-cottage all 13 Shepherds lived in and none of the exterior glass conservatory would have existed then) and the original hand water pump still stands in the garden! I have photographs of this, if anyone is interested. I also have photos of a map of the Moorend Cross area from the early 1800s.
In 2007 I spent some time at the Hereford Records office and discovered that Susannah Shepherd (born 1810-ish) had been previously married to Thomas Overton, who died at about age 24, possibly in Stanford Bishop. Would anyone know why he died so young? He seems to have come from Snails Bank, Cradley. Charles Shepherd took on Susannah, born in Hope-under-Dinmore (then Overton) with a baby stepson, John. Susannah's maiden name had been Herrington and her family came from the Leominster area and had been tailors. I did discover that Susannah Herrington's grandfather, Peter Herrington, had his first son at age 17. My research took me back as far as a John Herrington in 1610.
It seems as if the Shepherd family - and I mean John and Ann Shepherd, back in the 1780s - had a huge family of eight children, just as Charles and Susannah did (10 children). Does anyone know anything about John and Ann Shepherd or where they came from? I hope to go back to the Hereford Records office again one day and see if I can find out anything further.
When I next have time, I intend to go to the British Library and see if I can find any newspapers local to Mathon across the beginning of the 19th Century. Who knows, perhaps I may find the cause of Thomas Overton's early death!

SHEPHERD FAMILY
I have just had an email from a cousin regarding my family. My maiden name was Shepherd and the info I have received shows that my great grandfather was Charles Shepherd born December 1840 in Mathon. On looking at the website for Mathon I see there is a posting from janw in March 2009 asking about Charles Shepherd who lived in Mathon in 1841. It may be that this is the same person as above. I would be very interested if anyone can assist with the identity of janw. I feel there must be a family connection here. I also know that my family visited a family by the name of Davies who lived in Herefordshire, at Mongers Farm, Dormington and Bent Orchard, Nr Woolhope. Would anyone know of these.

Shepherd Family in Mathon
My husband's family came from Mathon. His 2xgt.grandfather Charles Shepherd, B.1800 has a gravestone in the Churchyard. I do know who janw is if you would like me to contact her and show her your message.

Shepherd Family in Mathon
Hi Janshep. How lovely to see your message. By all means if you can, show my message to janw. That would be great. As a follow up, my husband David and I visited Mathon churchyard about a month ago and found a tombstone for Charles Shepherd. This was propped against the wall of the graveyard. We took a photograph of this for posterity! I am still intrigued and would like to find out what the significance of Mathon is to the Shepherd family and what they did there. Perhaps I may learn more following your message. Cheers Nimblefingers.
Charles Shepherd
I will e-mail janw this evening. It's lovely to find another Shepherd with connections to Mathon.
Another distant cousin of the Shepherds in Mathon also paid a visit back in 2007, she took a photo of the gravestone of Charles Shepherd, b.1800 and died 1878. his wife Susannah (Susan) who died in 1886 and their son Henry who also died in 1878. I realised that your gravestone was their son Charles, as their gravestone was def. in the churchyard. I can send you a copy. The reference to Woolhope is Charles, 1840, and Harriet's daughter Susannah who married James Davies in 1892, they lived there and were in Checkley, Mordiford in 1911. Susannah died in 1942.
Your Charles' grandfather was John b. 1756 d.1831 and his wife Ann was born in 1760 and died in 1835. The next year, 1836 Charles, b.1800 married Susan and they seem to have stayed in the family home at Moor End Cross and went on to have 9 children. The older brother, Edward Shepherd also lived there and they were both ag.labs.
Your Charles' brother George, b.1839, married Eliza Jane Walden Garbett in 1864 and by 1871 had moved up to Altrincham, Cheshire. Their grandson was my Father-in-law. I would love to send you all the info that I have collected, but don't know how to do that. Any ideas?
All the best.

Shepherd Family
First of all, thank you so much for your most informative reply. It all takes a bit of digesting but I am really grateful to you for supplying me with so much information. I thought I ought to fill you in with my branch of the Shepherd family. My father was George Raymond Shepherd, born November 1894, the son of George William Shepherd, born 1869 in Yarkhill, Herefordshire. My father's grandfather was Charles Shepherd, born December 1840 in Mathon who was married to Harriet Vernall, born 1846, in Herefordshire. My father's mother was Sarah Shayler who was born in 1867 in Alcester, Warwickshire. My father married Edith Jane Hughes, January (not sure of the year) and they had two daughters. My sister, Patricia Margaret, born November 1928 and unfortunately she died in October 1964, having been married for only six weeks. I was born in December 1938. My father had two sisters, Millicent Beatrice, who was married to William Hancock, and for a time they lived in a cottage at Dunstall, nr Pershore, Worcestershire. The other sister was Marjorie who never married and the latter part of her life was spent looking after her mother. (Sarah Shayler as above) who was bedridden and blind. I would really like to know how my branch of the family came to live and work in Birmingham. What bought them to that part of the country? It saddens me that I have no-one I can now ask about the family as to my knowledge I am the sole survivor of the Shepherds from Birmingham. I do hope I can find out more. As you say it would be lovely to exchange information. Don't quite know how we can do this as I don't want to put email address or phone numbers on the internet. I wonder if the Church in Mathon would have any suggestions. Having established this link, I hope we may be able to either meet or communicate in some way. Thank you again for your response. Incidentally I was also janshep before my marriage!
All the best
